Resolutions For 2016 That Are Way More Fun Than Losing Weight

What a year 2015 was!!  I don't know about you, but I haven't always had the best luck when it comes to the odd-numbered years.  But between gardening, exploring, writing and cooking, this definitely was a better year than most.  I was really hoping I could look back at my year-end 2014 post to see what I promised to achieve to see if I came close to my goals...but since writing in my blog clearly wasn't a priority from June 2014 to July 2015, I have absolutely nothing to go off of (clearly something I'll need to keep working on in 2016). So let's just start with a fresh slate and come up with a whole new set of resolutions for 2016 that are way more interesting than "I resolve to lose weight".
Because, and let's be honest, I've tried that resolution for the last 20 years and it hasn't stuck yet...so it's time to move on.

For my health:  I resolve to continue working on my sobriety.

As of today, I am currently 548 days sober. That's over 18 months!  (Pardon me while I take a moment to pat myself on the back for that one).  I'd love to say that it gets easier as each day goes by; but really, it just becomes more of a habit to not pick up a pint.  Some days are better than others, but I'd be lying to you if I didn't tell you there are still moments I wish I could have just...one...drink....and those are the times I have to keep working through.  But I'm going to embrace my continued trek through teetotaling with a sense of adventure and use it as an opportunity to scout out more coffee roasters.  I can't guarantee exactly how the year will turn out, but at least I'll be well caffeinated!

For my home:  I resolve to grow more and buy less!

One of the greatest discoveries this last year were the random tomato vines that suddenly popped up in the backyard.  The tomatoes began an avalanche of gardening at my house, including herbs, peppers, onions and pumpkins (poor pumpkins...didn't quite make it this time).  The look of my garden gave my home a natural little facelift - it brightened up the front yard and made everything seem more alive and inviting.  This year, I'm not only going to pick up my garden from where summer left off, but find a few more things to grow and try my hand at preserving what I have a little better.  I don't think I'll be able to live off the land entirely...but I'm curious to see just how far I can get!

For my head:  I'm going to learn a new hobby!

2015 was a banner year for What The &%^$! Did I Do? - not only did I actually write more than I think I ever have, but I also moved my blog to a self-hosted website with its very own domain name.   This year, I'm going to up my blog game by learning how to take better pictures for it courtesy of my most-awesome birthday gift, my new Nikon camera (thank you Nick!!!).  Up until now, I've managed to get by with just my handy little iPhone camera, but I think it's time to add a little more visual depth to match the literary geniusness of my posts.

For my heart: I will explore more and stress less!

My husband is my greatest cheerleader and inspiration.  He never shies away from all of the random places I drag him off to explore, and he has yet to turn down any of the strange sounding foods I've cooked and placed in front of him at the table. He also keeps me centered when I start to go off the rails about, well, anything.  Believe it or not, I tend to get bogged down in the minutiae instead of sitting back and enjoying the overall picture.  So this year, I'm going to get out, have fun and enjoy all of the moments more and I'm going to focus on all the little details that don't quite go the way they were supposed to much, much less.

Like rain.  At my pool party.  In July.

OK...so I haven't completely forgiven Mother Nature for that incident just yet....I'm working on it.   ;-)

So that's it.  My resolutions for 2016...and nowhere is the word "diet" found amongst them.  I think it's good that we sometimes we focus on what's inside ourselves, and what makes us feel right in the world instead of the constant demands we place on our outward appearance.  There's just so much more to the world...places to go, family and friends to spend time with, new recipes to make.  And this year I'm going to try as many as possible.  Stay tuned for lots of posts, lots of recipes and lots of pictures.

Lots and lots of AWESOME new pictures.  With my new camera.  Because it's most-awesome.
And because I made a resolution to.

Happy New Year to you and your family!!
